This 710 head sheep yard was designed in close consultation with the producer to suit both current handling requirements and future expansion plans.
The layout allows for smooth livestock movement through the yard, while maintaining clear separation between key working areas. A double drenching race was incorporated to improve efficiency during animal health treatments, alongside a dedicated drafting race to allow sheep to be sorted without disrupting flow through the main handling system.
A key requirement from the client was the positioning of the loading ramp. This was carefully integrated into the design to suit the existing site conditions and the way the producer operates, ensuring safe and practical loading when it’s needed.
The yard has also been set out with future growth in mind. Space has been allowed behind the system for the addition of a holding paddock, giving flexibility as stock numbers or management practices change.
Key Features
Double Drenching Race
Designed to handle larger numbers efficiently, allowing treatments to be carried out with minimal disruption to overall flow. A custom dividing panel was installed between the two races, set lower than the outer panels as specified by the client to improve access and usability.
Separate Drafting Race
Allows sheep to be sorted independently from the main working race, reducing pressure, improving efficiency and keeping movement steady through the yard.
Large Capacity Flow Design
Designed to comfortably hold 710 sheep, the yard layout supports steady movement through key working areas without congestion. Pen sizes, race access, and flow paths have been set out to keep sheep moving forward in larger numbers which helps improve efficiency when working stock.
Yard Design & Flow
This yard is a strong example of what can be achieved when design is guided by how the system will be used.
Rather than forcing a standard layout onto the site, the design was shaped around the producer’s priorities from the drenching setup to the ramp location and future paddock integration. Each element has been positioned to keep sheep moving forward calmly, while allowing the handler to work efficiently across different tasks.
The result is a yard that supports steady livestock flow, reduces unnecessary movement, and makes day to day handling more straightforward.
Designed Around The Way The Producer Works
no two operations run the same, and this project reflects that.
By working closely with the client and adapting key features to suit their preferences, this yard delivers a setup that fits the operation.
